University staff profile
With his first degree from the University of Strathclyde in Hotel Management, Steven worked for nearly 20 years in the hotel sector, mostly with Forte Hotels, attaining the position of Training Director. He joined the University of Brighton in 1991, and has since taught, researched and published in the main field of human resource management in the service sector, with particular emphasis on the hospitality industry.
He completed a Masters degree in Human Resource Development at Portsmouth University, and a PhD from the University of Brighton for a programme of study entitled, "The relationship between organisational culture and labour turnover."
Within the School of Sport and Service Management, Steven is Assistant Head of School responsible for Operations. He has been a Director of the Eastbourne & District Chamber of Commerce for over 10 years and is Chair of the Eastbourne Education Business Partnership. Steven is also an elected staff member of the University of Brighton's Board of Governors.
Steven is Chair of the steering group for the European Academy of Hospitality Management
Steven has been the author or co-author of seven books on the subject of human resource management, including four editions of the title, "Managing People in the Hospitality Industry" and in 2013, he had published with co-author Michael J. Boella, the 9th edition of the title, "Human Resource Management in the Hospitality Industry", published by Routledge.
