Dr Sandeman is a Reader in Biomaterials with an interest in materials based approaches to moderate inflammation and infection and is Director of Postgraduate Studies for Life, Health and Physical Sciences. She has worked in the field of biomaterials science since obtaining her PhD in 1999 and enjoys the challenges of a career integrating biomaterials research with academic oversight of science PhD students; investing in the next generation of research scientists.
How I like to teach
I teach on subjects related to biomaterials science. My early teaching experience was first year undergraduate teaching in biological sciences and then in special topics modules on inflammation and haemocompatibility. I currently teach on subjects related to medical device technologies, ophthalmic biomaterials and tissue regeneration. I also lead research methodologies and research communication skills units within the University Research Development Framework for postgraduate research students.
My research interests
My research interests are broadly focused on the use of biomaterials strategies to moderate inflammation and infection; generating a better understanding and ability to manipulate cell-biomaterial interactions for long-term health benefit. I undertake research into nanostructured carbons for biomedical applications, biomedical device technologies related to the treatment of organ failure, smart biomaterial approaches to control infection, inflammation and oxidative stress, cell scaffolds, corneal biomaterials and tissue engineering.

I completed my PhD in 1999 looking at factors which affect cell interactions with novel biomaterials for corneal tissue replacement. I progressed from research fellow to Reader working on projects related to my research in ophthalmic biomaterials and then in adsorbent and smart polymer biomaterials as medical devices for organ replacement. I began an additional role working as Deputy Director of Postgraduate Studies in 2013 and then as Director of Postgraduate studies in 2015. I currently combine research activities in the Biomaterials and Medical Devices research group with academic oversight of PhD students as Director of Postgraduate Studies for Life, Health and Physical Sciences.

Within the University as Director of Postgraduate Studies for Life, Health and Physical Sciences I am a member of the Doctoral College Board and associated committees and am independent chair for PhD viva examinations. Within the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences I represent the Biomaterials research group at the school research strategy committee.
External to the University I sit on the Newton Fund Biomedical Sciences grant review panel and on the Global Innovation Initiative grant review panel for the British Council (2014 - current), I act as a grant reviewer for the UK BBSRC, am editor for the Journal of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, BioMed Research International, am journal referee for a number of biomaterials journals, a member of the European Society for Biomaterials, the European Society for Artificial Internal Organs and the Kent, Sussex and Surrey Renal Research Network.
