Biography

After receiving a degree in Chemistry from the University of Nottingham I spent four years at the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa) in Prof. Jerry Atwood's group working on the synthesis and structural characterization of azacrown lariat ethers and their metal complexes. This resulted in a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry and a move to the State University of New York (Stony Brook). Under the direction of Prof. Tom Bell I synthesized torands (13 steps from start to finish!) and determined the structures of their complexes by X-ray crystallography. After a year I returned to England to work with Prof. Mike Drew at the University of Reading on computational methods for the prediction of solid state structures ranging from metal oxides to macrocyclic complexes. In 1993 I joined the University of Brighton where I am at present Reader in Supramolecular and Bioinorganic Chemistry. In 1996 I was awarded a Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship which enabled me to investigate the use of oxacalix[3]arenes as metalloenzyme and metalloprotein models. Since then my research has encompassed supramolecular, bioinorganic and computuational chemistry. In 2005 I published “A Practical Guide to Supramolecular Chemistry” and developed an associated website. I am on the local organizing committee of a forthcoming International Symposium on Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry to be held in the UK in 2011.

Affiliations

I am a member of several organizations including the American Chemical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry (CChem, MRSC), the RSC UK Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry (UKMSC) subject group and the UK Computational Chemistry Working Party. I am on the committee of the UKMSC and the Editorial Boards of Supramolecular Chemistry and Sensors.
